David Peters — Photographer

I’d like to say that Photography has been my passion since I was a small child. In fact, I remind myself that I wanted to be an aerospace design engineer for many years — that is until I had an unfortunate run-in with Physics in high school!

Even before that run-in, I’d been playing with photography. From my first shots using a Kodak 110-Instamatic. I quickly switched to 35mm and spent many a happy day from high school through college, shooting, developing film, and printing pictures. I graduated from Austin Peay with a BFA in Photography in 1989.

During the years to come, photography was a heavy hobby for me. Graduate school, long thought to be in pursuit of an MFA in Photography, actually resulted in a degree in print management to further my career.

Life, fate, whatever you’d like to call it, brought me back to Heather in 2003. We’d been camp sweethearts in 1984 and had bumped into each other from time to time after that, but when I came back to Tennessee, I found it was to get married and do the family thing.

In 2005, our son Griffin was born — and I immediately said to myself “how can I exploit him . . . ?” (You’ll have to picture me rubbing my chin like an evil genius) I started shooting professionally when I first shot Griffin’s pre-school class photos. Since then, I’ve branched out to include pets, dance classes and my original love, fine art photography.

I have taught Photography and Graphic Design at the International Academy of Design & Technology in Nashville since 2006 and was very disappointed to learn that our parent company will be closing the school. What does the future hold for me?

Since October of 2013, I’ve been displaying my work at Bella Grace in Hendersonville. I’m pleased to say that several pieces have sold and I’m looking forward to more success in the future.
